6. There is little to no music in the world that Duane Arcotte lives in. Most of any CDs or computerized music have been banned because of the Entertainment Censorship Act that took place at the election of the President in his first term. However, there are places in the city where people have safely hidden CD players with stacks of discs to play their favorite music. Duane likely found one of these places. He is a classical person, leaning towards foreign operas because he likes the sound of how different languages are sung. One of his favorites to hum while walking alone is the Largo Al Factotum from The Barber of Seville, even though he has a terrible, gravelly voice. Sometimes, the hymns in Church get stuck in his head, so he replaces them with heavier music that he also finds alluring. 

16. Being alone, with no one to appreciate him for who he is. Also, he has a great fear of spiders, but to play up his masculinity at an early age he pretended to be indifferent towards them.

29. His room is as embellished as it can be while still keeping to the restrictions that the government demands. Each room is fitted with a desk, a wardrobe, a bed, and a bedside table. Any other fixture needs to be supplied by the owner of the house, but must first be approved by the landlord. Every room has a wooden cross cemented to a wall, in plain sight no matter where one is in the room. Most houses have wooden floors, so Duane decided to put in a small rug to make things more homey. His most treasured possessions are the box of tobacco and a pile of rolling paper hidden in his desk, ribbons that he collected from his little sister every year for his birthday, and, in later years, his trench knife that he keeps underneath his pillow while he sleeps.
